The discovery of gold in 1886 ended the rural tranquillity in which Klerksdorp had basked for some 50 years; with this new found wealth a gathering of some 4000 diggers drew lots for the privilege and rights to mine the area. 
Within a year the town had no less than 70 bars and 200 shops. In 2004 this all changed yet again when the Rio Casino opened its doors.
The Casinos theme is based upon the exotic carnival theme of the Brazilian Rio Carnival with the pulsating rhythms and eye-catching colours of the exotic carnival.
Rio Casino is a hub of excitement for the whole family offering restaurants and other family activities. The casino boasts 11 Gaming Table for the Roulette, Blackjack and Poker players whilst the Slots players have not been over looked.
